Top things to do in New York City

New York City (NYC) is one of the most famous cities in the world and needs no introduction. Made up of five boroughs, it is a major hub of world’s commercial, financial and cultural centres. And at the centre of it all, is the most famous (and smallest) of the five boroughs, the island of Manhattan. The other four boroughs are Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. Through it flows the famous Hudson river. No one post can ever do justice to the top things to do in New York City. So in this post, I’ll present to you a very high-level list of things to do in New York City.

Manhattan – We have to start our journey from Manhattan, which is the smallest but the busiest of the five boroughs. It’s skyline is one of the most famous and recognisable skylines. Some of the world’s famous buildings call Manhattan their home, including the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, One World Trade Centre and the Rockefeller Centre. You can go up to the viewing platforms at the One World Trade Centre, Rockefeller Centre and Empire State Building for a bird’s eye view of NYC. Early morning (sunrise) and late night tours are most popular.

At the centre of the island, is the famous Central Park. This park is one of the most visited places on earth. It’s covers 843 acres and is the most visited urban park in the United States. It measures 2.5 miles (4.0 km) from north to south and 0.5 miles (0.80 km) from west to east. So if you want see it all, you can easily spend a whole day in there. The park has a number of famous and breath-taking sculptures including the Alice in Wonderland Margaret Delacorte Memorial, Cleopatra’s Needle, Angel of the Waters, and Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument amongst others. The park also has a memorial for John Lennon, Strawberry Fields Memorial, who was murdered nearby. One relaxing and romantic way to see the park will be to take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park.

Apart from Central Park, Manhattan is home to two other most visited place of the world – Times Square and Grand Central Terminal. The island is connected to rest of New York state, including the other boroughs through 21 bridges. The most famous of them are the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, Queensboro, Triborough, and George Washington Bridge. Some of the famous neighbourhoods in Manhattan are Harlem, Chinatown, East Village. SoHo, Greenwich Village and Hell’s Kitchen. These are great locations to walk around and soak in the city’s culture, shopping and culinary offerings. Last but not the least, New York is famous for its Broadway. Tickets to more popular Broadway productions might be difficult to get so it’s always good to plan ahead. I’ll always recommend you go watch a show, if you can. And perhaps, enjoy a slice of New York Cheesecake as a post-show treat.

Brooklyn – Arguably the second most famous borough of NYC, Brooklyn (also known as Kings County) is the most populous borough out of the five. You’ll kick-off your Brooklyn experience as you walk across the Brooklyn bridge. This is one of the most famous bridges in the world and an icon in popular culture. You can walk around the city (guide recommended) to see some of the most impressive graffiti and murals on the city walls. Brooklyn is also famous for its pizzas. So don’t forget to try a few slices of Brooklyn pizza and experience gastronomical delight.

If you are going in summer, you can check out Coney Island. This is a neighbourhood known for its sandy beaches and is an entertainment spot. Luna Park in Coney Island is NYC’s largest theme park and is a perfect destination for the adrenaline junkies. Other key places of interest are the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Prospect Park, Brooklyn Flea Market, Brooklyn Heights and Brooklyn Promenade.

Queens – This is the largest borough of NYC, area wise. Queens, or Queens County, is home to NYC two most important airports – John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. This borough is probably most famous for its sporting links. It is the home of  Flushing Meadows–Corona Park; Citi Field, home to the New York Mets baseball team; and; the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, site of the U.S. Open tennis tournament. If you are into movies, the Museum of Moving Image is a fascinating place to visit in Queens. It is also a melting pot of culture, which means you get a wide selection of world cuisines such as Chinese, Thai, Nepalese, Dominican or Indian food.

The Bronx – This borough is probably most famous for being the home of the New York Yankees, the Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Zoo houses thousands of species from the animal kingdom. It happens to be the largest metropolitan zoo in the US, by land area. The New York Botanical Gardens is also in Bronx, hat contains a landscape with over one million living plants.

If you are into your contemporary art, then The Bronx Museum of Arts is a good place to spend an afternoon. As with some of the other boroughs, I’ll once again recommend a guided tour of the Bronx. Because you never know what’s around the corner.

Staten Island – The southernmost, least populated and perhaps least visited borough of NYC is Staten Island. This borough is famous for its parks and is a beautiful place for a relaxing day out. One of the most famous things associated with Staten Island is probably the Staten Island Ferry. As this is the only borough not connected by the NYC Subway system, the ferry is the easiest way to get to Staten Island.

You can get a free from the New York Harbour in Lower Manhattan. It is free and also provides a beautiful view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Lower Manhattan. You can also get dedicated ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from New York Harbour.
